Safety Leadership

“I don’t have a right to make my living where it is okay for you to get hurt.” Richard N Knowles, Belle, WV

The leadership of safety is a key focus in our leadership work. Over 95% of all injuries and incidents are the result of the actions of people. So reducing unsafe behaviors is the path to reducing injuries and incidents. Our processes quickly generate alignment, focus and energy producing visible, easily measured results through the reduction of unsafe acts; this is the path to reducing injuries and results.

Safety Leadership Workshops
We engage the workforce in this practical, hands-on approach which enables the people to see their actual safety behaviors, helps them to co-create and reach rational solutions to their safety issues and supports them as they move forward to doing the real work of building a safer workplace. Often, the participants quickly see how to apply the ideas and skills learned in these workshops to other parts of their business resulting in broadly based , sustainable business improvements.

We use proprietary, proven processes to accomplish this in these 1-2 day workshops. Over 150 of these Safety Leadership Workshops have been successfully run in the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand in the last 10 years. When management credibly supports this work the injury and incident rates drop to significantly lower levels and the new performance is sustainable.

The Business Case
Since an average OSHA Recordable Injury costs between $25,000 and $30,000, a rapid reduction in injuries results in significant improvements in earnings as well as in employee morale and dedication. Those organizations, who build on the workshops we lead, use the maps we’ve developed together, and actively support the safety teams and their discussions see rapid improvements in the organization’s safety performance – often achieving over a 50% reduction in injury frequency rates in just a few months.

Testimonials

"I have known Dick and Claire Knowles since 2000 when I was privileged enough to be trained as a safety facilitator using their philosophy.  Once in your career you come across one of those life changing experiences with life changing people- these 2 weeks back in 2000 was that once in a career opportunity for me.  After seeing business through this new paradigm my team eliminated injuries from the manufacturing site that I was responsible for.  Interestingly enough (actually not so when you understand the paradigm) other business metrics such as efficiency, quality and customer service improved at a similar rate.  Ever since those days I have used this view of the world to improve other businesses that I have been responsible for with very good outcomes.  We have recently had Dick and Claire run a workshop within my organization again- the feedback from everyone, at all levels, about their teachings, about the benefits of their teachings and about Dick and Claire as people has been outstanding.  One of my colleagues described Dick as a the "Deming of Leadership"  This is a very appropriate metaphor for both Dick and Claire.  I thoroughly recommend these two inspiring people to anyone who is struggling to get what they want in an organisation and wants to do something different.  I am happy to be contacted directly for a personal reference."
